On 10 October 2024, Inge Römgens, vice-member of the MERIAN steering committee, successfully defended her PhD thesis titled Taking Seriously Collaborative Artistic Research Practices. In her book, Römgens writes about the trouble of artistic research practices based on empirical studies with theatre artists:
As intermediary practice in-between academic and artistic conventions, artistic research appeals to artists, scientists, and policymakers alike. It allows for the emergence of new modes of knowledge acquisition. But what are these new kinds of knowledge? And how can they be identified, comprehended, and valued? In practice, these questions bring forward a lot of ‘trouble’ as both artists and academics must get to work interpreting, sharing, or discussing what they are doing, even though they do not know how, and how they can relate to something that is distinct from what they are familiar with and have tried.
